Why Have Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) Surgery?

If you have benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), then you might have some urinary problems. An enlarged prostate gland can affect your urinary channel and its functions.

For example, you might have difficulty passing urine normally.  As your condition worsens, you might get regular urinary tract infections, bladder stones and kidney problems. Some men can't urinate at all if they have advanced BPH problems.

If BPH is giving you some trouble, then your doctor might recommend laser surgery. A HoLEP procedure can reduce the size of your prostate gland and stop it from affecting your urinary system.

What are the advantages of having a HoLEP procedure rather than other surgeries?

Remove More Tissue

If BPH has affected your urinary system, then your prostate gland has grown into it. It is causing a blockage or obstruction that affects your ability to urinate.

While other laser and traditional surgeries can help with this problem, they might not give you complete relief. Some procedures cut out the prostate from inside the gland. This means that surgery might not get rid of all of the obstruction.

HoLEP surgery works from a different angle. It removes parts of your prostate from the edges to reduce its size. This procedure can remove more of the tissue that is in the wrong places. So, you should see better results.

Treat Any Size of Prostate Gland

Some laser surgical techniques only work on smaller prostate glands. If your prostate is very enlarged, then you might not be a suitable patient for laser surgery. You might have to have a traditional procedure.

If you have open surgery, then your procedure will take more out of you. You'll have a wound site that will take time to heal. It could take you longer to leave the hospital and recover. You might have problems with post-operative bleeding.

HoLEP surgery works on any size of prostate. Even if your gland is very enlarged, you can tap into the benefits of laser surgery. Your surgery will be less invasive, and your recovery time will be faster. You're also less likely to have any post-operative bleeding.

Reduce the Need for Future Retreatment

In some cases, traditional and laser BPH surgeries work well for a while but then need to be repeated. If you don't remove enough of the prostate, then it can grow back more quickly. The relief you get from your current urinary problems might not last.

HoLEP procedures have a better long-term success rate. You're less likely to need retreatment in the future.
